Aloo Matar Masala Recipe | Potato Peas Masala Recipe

Potatoes and Peas combo is one of the best duos when it comes to preparing gravies. This is my version of aloo matar masala to suit the taste of those members in my family who do not prefer to eat heavily spiced gravies for rotis. This is mildy spiced but has a wonderful aroma of jeera and garam masala. I cook the potatoes till they are too soft so that they are easily digestible and also help to thicken the gravy when mashed slightly. This dish tastes better with time. Enjoy rotis and pulaos with this excellent accompaniment!

Peas is one of those vegetables that is grown by the crew members aboard the International Space Station.

Ingredients:
• 3 large Potatoes
• 1/2 cup Green Peas
• 2 Onions
• 1 Tomato
• 1 Green chilli
• 1″ piece Ginger
• 5 cloves Garlic
• 1 tsp Red Chilli powder
• 1 tsp Coriander powder
• 3/4 tsp Garam masala powder
• 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
• 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
• 2 tbsp Oil
• Water
• Salt as required

Directions:
1. Heat 1 1/2 tbsp oil in a pan. Add sliced onions, chopped ginger, chopped garlic and slit green chilli. Saute with a pinch of salt.

2. Cook till they become translucent (approx. 4 min) and add the chopped tomatoes. Saute with a pinch of salt.

3. Cook till they become soft and grind to a smooth paste.

4. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds. Once it splutters, add the cubed potatoes and green peas. Mix well.

5. Add the ground paste and mix well.

6. Add the red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder, salt and required quantity of water (3 or 4 cups – reduce the water if you want a thick consistency). Pressure cook till 3 whistles and serve.

Notes

  • Adding a pinch of salt while sauteing onions and tomatoes helps to speed up the cooking process.
  • If you are using dried peas, wash them and soak overnight. Drain the water and wash again if required before using.
  • I cook till three whistles for the potatoes to become too soft. If you want firm as well as boiled potatoes, it is enough to cook till two whistles.
