Cabbage Thoran Recipe | Kerala Style Cabbage Stir Fry Recipe

Cabbage thoran is one of the dishes in the traditional kerala sadya spread. This is a dry side dish that is loaded with the flavor of coconut and tastes absolutely good. I have come across many recipes for this and finally settled on this recipe. This has earned many fans in our home. You can use beans, carrot, unripe jackfruit or spinach instead of cabbage. Even cauliflower tasted good when prepared like this. Give this a try and you will be definitely satisfied.

Grind grated coconut, green chillies, garlic, cumin seeds & turmeric powder → Mix this with chopped cabbage → Heat oil in a pan → Add mustard, curry leaves & cabbage one by one → Mix well and cook covered without adding water & stirring in between


  • 4 cups Chopped cabbage
  • Salt

  To grind:

  • 3 tbsp Grated coconut
  • 2 Green chillies
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder

   To temper:

  • 1/2 tsp Mustard
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp Oil

1. Grind the ingredients under ‘To grind’ to a coarse paste without adding water. Mix this with the chopped cabbage.
Cabbage Thoran - Step 12. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard and allow it to splutter. Add curry leaves followed by the cabbage. Mix well.

3. Cover and cook over low flame. Stir in between. Don’t add water. It gets cooked in its own juice. Cook till done and serve.

  • Do not add water while cooking. The dish becomes soggy and the taste will not be as expected.
  • You can also add chopped onions after tempering.
  • Same method can be used to prepare beans, carrot, cauliflower, unripe jackfruit or spinach.
